2a: CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT OF RESPECT AND RAPPORT

A monthly drawing board where students get to write their names in a square when they have Above and Beyond behavior. They will then be entered for a drawing of a prize basket. The baskets are provided by Ms. Snodgrass.

These are Turtle Hugs I gave to my students at Dunbar Intermediate.

Notes of encouragement from me for completing homework and assessments for my students.

Video showing mutual respect between the students and myself. The are engaged, raising their hands, and I am questioning them to get to the answer, rather than just giving them the answer. Hand signs are used to show understanding.

Classroom interactions that take place between myself and my students and among students are highly respectful, reflecting genuine warmth, caring, and sensitivity to students as individuals. In my classroom we all have respect for each other and the students exhibit respect for their peers. When one student does something Above and Beyond, we all cheer for them and share in their accomplishments. They show and contribute to high levels of civility among all members of the class respecting not only personal space and items, but emotions as well. The net result of our classroom is an environment where all students feel valued and are comfortable taking intellectual risks.

My cooperating teacher’s classroom is a very nurturing classroom. Students are allowed to have small and big feelings and show them, without disrespect from others. Each morning we greet each student and ask them how they are doing. The lights in the classroom are low and there are two cozy lamps lit on the dark side. She will usually have some soft meditating music playing in the background creating a genuinely warm environment. The students come in and respectfully answer our questions if they feel like it and usually give us a hug or say good morning showing the respect and care they have for us as teachers.

When a student goes Above and Beyond, they write they name on the large monthly chart. Once the chart is full Ms. Snodgrass draws two names and awards those students with prizes. These students are being rewarded for their respect, the care the show, and the attention and focus they have towards their studies. New students are chosen each time until all have had a turn. The more they do things that are Above and Beyond the more their name is written on the chart.

The worksheets above show my respect and how I genuinely care for each student, as I praise them for their work and offer encouragement. The Turtle Hugs I bought for my students at Dunbar Intermediate. I wanted to let them know that I am here for them and care for them so very much.

The classroom setting is a safe space where students, others, and I feel safe and valued. I feel that I always contribute something to each part of the day. It truly is an environment where all who enter feel appreciated and comfortable. This type of environment is something I will strive for in my classroom, as it allows students to have the confidence they need to ask questions during lessons and take risks. This is shown in the video. Students are not afraid to speak out and raise their hands, answer questions, or take their time to come to the answer they seek.
